At Portesham CE VA Primary School we aim to develop confident mathematicians who can apply their learning in abstract ways.

 Within each year group, children will learn within and across the following domains:

• Number and Place Value
• Addition and subtraction
• Multiplication and division
• Fractions
• Measure
• Geometry

Through cultivating growth mindsets, pupils realise that there is no such thing as a maths person and that everyone can achieve more than they think. Pupils are encouraged to believe in themselves and are frequently reminded that mistakes and challenges are the best times for their brain.

Maths remains a key focus area for us as a school in our Learning Improvement Plan. By working closely with parents, carefully planning the progression of mathematical skills across the school and offering high quality lessons for every child , we have increased the percentage of children achieving the  highest grading in statutory assessments (Greater Depth) and ensure that all children are well supported and stretched in their mathematical learning.
